Spanish after Busuu: where to pick up

Busuu does teach Spanish: that is its catalog as of September 18, 2026. If you are already learning there, you do not have to start from scratch here: from “B1” you would continue at unit 19 “Familia y casa”. Your first session is a three-minute check that pins down your place, and the words you have covered come back for review a few at a time.

Busuu levels and where they land here

Your place here is set by word count, erring on the low side: an extra familiar lesson costs less than words you do not understand. A three-minute check pins it down.
Level on BusuuCEFR, as Busuu labels itLevel: DELEWhere you start here
A1A1Diploma de español nivel A1unit 1 “¡Hola!”
A2A2Diploma de español nivel A2unit 10 “De viaje”
B1B1Diploma de español nivel B1unit 19 “Familia y casa”
B2B2Diploma de español nivel B2unit 32 “En la cocina”

Busuu labels its courses with CEFR levels itself: they run from A1 to B2, and English goes up to C1. The level in the table is Busuu's own label.

Our Spanish course goes up to B1, which is 4061 words. Anything above that is no longer an app's job but exam preparation and real conversation.

What people usually know by this point

A2 → unit 10 “De viaje”

After this unit: I can buy a ticket, get through check-in and the border and check into a hotel

  • el horario
    timetable
From la hora, an hour. A train timetable and a shop's opening hours are the same word
  • el avión
    plane
    ah-VYON, stress on the end
  • la maleta
    suitcase
A suitcase of any kind. A small one is la maletita, and el maletero is a car trunk
  • la aduana
    customs
A word of Arabic root, like many Spanish ones starting with a-. The green channel is nada que declarar

B1 → unit 19 “Familia y casa”

After this unit: I can talk about relatives and children, describe the house and the yard, split the chores and ask for help

  • la fe
    faith
The shortest noun in Spanish. Feminine, and it almost never takes a plural
  • la feria
    fair (festival)
In Andalusia la feria is less a market than a town festival with music and dancing
  • dentro de dos días
    in two days
For the future, dentro de is the only way to say 'in'. Después de dos días looks backward: two days later
  • el primo
    male cousin
One word for the whole relation; a female cousin is la prima. In casual speech primo can also mean someone easy to fool

B2 → unit 32 “En la cocina”

After this unit: I can shop for food in more detail, cook from a recipe, name kitchenware and order food with reservations

  • raro
    strange
Both strange and rare: una enfermedad rara — a rare disease. After es raro que the verb goes into subjuntivo: es raro que no haya llamado
  • las uvas
    grapes
Countable in Spanish: una uva — one grape. Under the New Year chimes on December 31 Spaniards eat exactly twelve of them, one per stroke
  • el melocotón
    peach
Spain's own word; Latin America says el durazno. Melocotón en almíbar is canned in syrup, and el nectarino is the nectarine
  • hacer a la plancha
    to grill
La plancha is a flat iron griddle — the same word as a clothes iron. A la parrilla is over the coals on a rack; the English 'grilled' covers both. Fried is frito

Spanish proficiency exam: DELE

DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is run by Instituto Cervantes. Its CEFR levels:

  • A1 — Diploma de español nivel A1
  • A2 — Diploma de español nivel A2
  • B1 — Diploma de español nivel B1
  • B2 — Diploma de español nivel B2
  • C1 — Diploma de español nivel C1
  • C2 — Diploma de español nivel C2

Besides DELE, Instituto Cervantes runs SIELE: a single test that gives a level from A1 to C1 by score, with no level to choose in advance.

A level in an app is not a certificate. Only the exam gives you one, and the exam includes writing and a conversation with a person: those need their own preparation.

How to switch without starting from lesson 1

  1. Tap your level. The row of links below this page opens Lingofly in Telegram, no install or sign-up. If you are new here, the “Spanish” course and your Busuu level are already selected: you only go through three short screens — language, goal and study time. If you already have an account, add the language and tap “Where to start” on its card in your profile.
  2. Take the check. Your first session is three minutes of “what does this mean?” questions, from easy to hard. Two failed bands in a row and the check ends: we do not drag you through what is too hard.
  3. Carry on from your place. The lessons before your place count as done. Their words come up in your warm-up a few a day: remember one and it is yours; forget it and it comes back again.

Frequently asked

Is Spanish in Busuu?

Yes. The difference is not whether the course exists but what is inside it: how many words, whether each has audio, whether the script is taught from zero. We have Spanish in full: 4061 words, with audio, a phrasebook and grammar in plain words.

What Spanish level do Busuu levels correspond to?

«A1» — A1, «A2» — A2, «B1» — B1 and «B2» — B2. These are Busuu's own labels; a three-minute check will pin down your place in our course.

Which exam do people take to prove their Spanish?

DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera), run by Instituto Cervantes, with levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. An app, ours or Busuu, prepares you with vocabulary and listening; the writing and speaking parts need their own preparation.

Will I have to start from lesson 1?

No. Mark your Busuu level and your first session will be a three-minute check, not lesson 1. From “B1” you would continue at unit 19 “Familia y casa”, and the words you have covered come back for review a few at a time. If you already have an account with us, add the language and tap “Where to start” on its card in your profile.
