Le liya, kar diya: carry the action to its end
A completed action takes a helper: the verb stem plus lena (for oneself) or dena (for another and for good). Kitab parh li — the book read-to-the-end; kha liya — eaten up; kar diya — done and finished. For example: “میں نے کتاب پڑھ لی” — I read the book to the end. A rule from the Urdu course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
A completed action takes a helper: the verb stem plus lena (for oneself) or dena (for another and for good). Kitab parh li — the book read-to-the-end; kha liya — eaten up; kar diya — done and finished.
The helper is not decoration: parhna is to read (perhaps partway), parh lena is to read through. The completion rides in the little word, and English spends a whole adverb on it.
The frame agrees with the doer: main ne… liya of a man, li of a woman. And the doer-mark ne — you have met it — stands only with transitive verbs: a completed deed demands its doer named. The intransitives of the table — so gaya, bhool gaya — go without ne.
Table
| plain | to the end | literally | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| پڑھنا — to read | پڑھ لیا | reading took | read through |
| کھانا — to eat | کھا لیا | eating took | eat up |
| پی لینا — to drink | پی لیا | drinking took | drink to the dregs |
| کرنا — to do | کر دیا | doing gave | do and done |
| دینا — to give | دے دیا | giving gave | hand over for good |
| بیٹھنا — to sit | بیٹھ گیا | sitting went | settle down |
| سونا — to sleep | سو گیا | sleeping went | fall asleep |
| بھولنا — to forget | بھول گیا | forgetting went | forget entirely |

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
