English

Prepositions of the road: do, z, u, na

Direction toward takes do plus the of form: do Lvova, do likaria, do shkoly. Going to the city is simply do mista. For example: “Їду з (z) Києва (Kyieva) до (Do) Львова (Lvova) потягом” (potiahom) — I am taking the train from Kyiv to Lviv. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Direction toward takes do plus the of form: do Lvova, do likaria, do shkoly. Going to the city is simply do mista.

Coming from takes z, stretched to iz or zi when the tongue trips: z Kyieva, iz mista, zi stantsii. Pick the version that sounds smoother; the meaning never changes.

Being somewhere takes u or v plus the place form: u hoteli, v aeroportu. The choice follows the sound before it: v after a vowel, u after a consonant — bula v aptetsi, but sydyt u kutku. One exception: before v, f, lv-, sv-, tv-, khv-, it stays u even after a vowel — my u vahoni, not v vahoni. It is pure sound flow, exactly the a and an switch of English, and the same flip runs through i/iy and z/iz.

Transport and stations take na: na vokzal, na potiah, na litak, na robotu. And waiting grabs na where English needs nothing: chekaty na avtobus.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
