Pane vchyteliu: the calling form in daily life
Ukrainian has a special form for calling someone. At school, at the post office and at the doctor's you hear it all the time. Addressing someone bends the name itself. For example: “Пане лікарю, мені погано” (meni pohano) — Doctor, I do not feel well. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Ukrainian has a special form for calling someone. At school, at the post office and at the doctor's you hear it all the time. Addressing someone bends the name itself.
Masculine takes -e or -u: Ivane, brate, druzhe, but after a soft consonant likariu, vchyteliu, Andriiu. Feminine takes -o, -e or -iu: Oleno, mamo, Mariie, babusiu.
Both parts of the address bend, not just the first: not pane likar but pane likariu, not pani Olena but pani Oleno. Leaving the second half unbent is the mark of a visitor.
Plurals hold still: panove, druzi. The father's name bends with the first name: Ivane Petrovychu. Everyday address is short and warm: dobryi den, pane to a man, pani to a woman, druzi to the whole room.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
