Text

At the beginning of each month we count the expenses one by one and round the sum. This year the rent grew by a third, and groceries doubled in price. Our income stayed the same, that is, the gap between them grew. One thing we cut: we stopped eating out and switched to buying in bulk, because buying piece by piece is many times more expensive. By the end of the month the money is barely enough, but there are no debts; we even made a small stock.

  3. Why did they switch to bulk buying?

  4. How are things by the end of the month?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Turkish?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
