To where, at where, from where — and the words that stand behind

Explaining the way means picking one of three tails and, if needed, adding a word after the noun. For example: “Kavşaktan sonra sağa dönün” — After the intersection turn right. A rule from the Turkish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Explaining the way means picking one of three tails and, if needed, adding a word after the noun.

The to-tail is -e/-a: durağa yürüdüm, sağa dönün. The at-tail is -de/-da: köşede bekliyorum. The from-tail is -den/-dan: buradan uzak mı. Which one goes with a verb the verb decides, and you learn it together with the verb.

Words like karşısında and arkasında stand after the noun, not in front of it. The noun takes the owner tail: postanenin karşısında, across from the post office.

The trap is kadar and doğru: they demand the to-tail. Sokağın sonuna kadar yürüyün, akşama doğru. But boyunca demands nothing: sokak boyunca.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
