Text
என் நண்பன் ஒரு பாட்டு பாடினான், நான் ஒரு போட்டோ எடுத்தன்.pōṉa vāram saṉikkiḻamai nāṅgaḷ tiraiyaraṅgattukku pōṉam. paḍam ēḻu maṇikku ārambam. nāṅgaḷ koñcam lēṭṭā pōṉam, ēṉeṇḍā sālaiyila vāgaṉa nerisal adigam. paḍam migavum suvārasyamā irundadu. isaiyum nallā irundadu, āṉā naḍigar eṉakku piḍikkēllai. paḍam muḍiñca piṟagu nāṅgaḷ kaḍaṟkaraiyila naḍakkap pōṉam. eṉ naṇbaṉ oru pāṭṭu pāḍiṉāṉ, nāṉ oru pōṭṭō eḍuttaṉ.Last Saturday we went to the cinema. The film began at seven. We were a little late, because there was a big traffic jam on the road. The film turned out very interesting. The music was good too, but I did not like the actor. After the film we went for a walk along the beach. My friend sang a song, and I took a photograph.

Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Tamil?
A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
