Text

The three of us set out on foot in the morning. We decided to go not by the usual street but straight across the field. At first all was well: palm trees along the edges of the field, a temple in the distance. After an hour not a single landmark could be seen. I understood we were lost. One friend of mine fell a little behind, another went ahead. I shouted, and he stopped to wait. Finally we saw a big tree and decided it was our landmark. Past the tree we went down a narrow path. That path ended in a dead end. We turned around, went up, and came out to the field again. We thought a shortcut would save an hour; and we spent two hours more. That is how one learns — with one's feet, not with calculation.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. Which way did they decide to go?

  2. What happened after an hour?

  3. What did the narrow path end in?

  4. How much time did they lose?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Tamil?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
