Text

  • Naš pralni stroj je začel ropotati pri vsakem ožemanju. Najprej sem preveril kable in vtičnico, a tam ni bilo napake. Nato sem prebral navodila za uporabo in odvil zadnjo ploščo z izvijačem.
Our washing machine started making noise at every spin. First I checked the cables and the outlet, but there was no fault there. Then I read the manual and unscrewed the back panel with a screwdriver. Inside, one screw was completely loose, so I screwed it back in. The noise became less, but the little lamp still blinked, so I submitted a request to the service. The repairman said the cost of the repair was low and that it was too early to write the machine off.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What went wrong with the washing machine?

  2. What did the narrator check first?

  3. What did he find inside?

  4. What did the repairman say?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Slovenian?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
