Definiteness: how Slovenian gets by without 'the'
There is no article in Slovenian, and the difference between 'a sweater' and 'the sweater' is still there. The adjective carries it: nov pulover — some new sweater, novi pulover — the new one. The whole difference is -i at the end. For example: “Kupil sem nov pulover” — I bought a new sweater (some new one). A rule from the Slovenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
There is no article in Slovenian, and the difference between 'a sweater' and 'the sweater' is still there. The adjective carries it: nov pulover — some new sweater, novi pulover — the new one. The whole difference is -i at the end.
You can see it only in the masculine singular: zelen and zeleni, dolg and dolgi, črn and črni. Feminine and neuter have one form (zelena, zeleno), and there the point is clear from the talk or propped up by ta.
The long form is obligatory after a pointing or a possessive word: ta rdeči šal, moj novi naslov. Also in set names where the adjective has grown onto the word: vozni red, potni list, jedilni list.
In Ljubljana you often hear ta instead of the ending: daj mi ta rdečega — give me the red one. They talk that way at the market; in writing, use the ending.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
