Words that are not read the way they look
ආයුබෝවන් (āyubōvan) — hello. aa-yu-BOH-vun; the stress stays level — Sinhala barely uses any
ලාභයි (lābhayi) — cheap. laa-ba-yi; the bh in lābha is an aspirated b, you can hear the puff of air
කෑෂ් (kǣṣ) — cash. kaesh: the æ is a long 'a', hold it twice as long as usual
සැහැල්ලුයි (sæhælluyi) — light (weight). se-hael-lu-yi: two æ sounds in a row and a doubled l — don't swallow the middle
කුස්සිය (kussiya) — kitchen. kus-si-ya: the doubled ss is held longer than a single one
ඇඳ (ænda) — bed. e-nda: the n here is light, almost swallowed
පිඟන් (pingan) — dishes. pi-ngan: the nga is one half-nasal sign, said as a knot
ඇහැ (æhæ) — eye. e-hae; both vowels are the open æ, as in English 'cat'
භයානකයි (bhayānakayi) — dangerous. bha-ya-na-kayi: the bh is an aspirated b, the puff of air right after the consonant
ග්රීෂ්ම කාලය (grīṣma kālaya) — summer. griish-ma: the gr is one fused cluster, and the sh is a hushing sound
How to work on pronunciation on your own
Listening and repeating aloud is not a platitude — it is the only technique available without a teacher. Saying words out loud gives a small but measured gain over silent reading, and it is also the only way to notice that your mouth is not shaping a sound your ear already tells apart.

Second: listen to whole words, not isolated sounds. A sound never occurs in speech on its own — it always stands next to its neighbours and changes with them.
