Stavit and postavit: the verb walks in pairs
A verb lives as a pair: stavit — the process; postavit — once and done. The question tells them apart: chto delat? against chto sdelat? For example: “Вчера он ставил полку весь вечер, а поставил только к ночи” — Yesterday he spent the whole evening putting up the shelf and only finished by night. A rule from the Russian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
A verb lives as a pair: stavit — the process; postavit — once and done. The question tells them apart: chto delat? against chto sdelat?.
The pair is usually made by a prefix: pisat — napisat, rezat — narezat. But the prefix shifts the meaning too: perestavit — move elsewhere; dostavit — bring over.
Sometimes the pair is two different words: brat — vzyat, govorit — skazat.
A done verb is not afraid of the future: postavlyu zavtra means it will be done later. And stavlyu is about the process or the habit.
Table
| Process | Result | How the pair is made |
|---|---|---|
| stavit | postavit | a prefix |
| pisat | napisat | a prefix |
| rezat | narezat | a prefix |
| dvigat | sdvinut | a prefix |
| brat | vzyat | different words |
| govorit | skazat | different words |
By example
- Вчера он ставил полку весь вечер, а поставил только к ночиVchera on stavil polku ves vecher, a postavil tolko k nochiYesterday he spent the whole evening putting up the shelf and only finished by night
- Я напишу письмо, когда вернусьYa napishu pismo, kogda vernusI will write the letter when I come back
- Он всегда говорит правду, а сегодня сказал лишнееOn vsegda govorit pravdu, a segodnya skazal lishneeHe always tells the truth, and today he said one thing too many
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in a Russian example sentence?
“Вчера он ставил полку весь вечер, а поставил только к ночи” (Vchera on stavil polku ves vecher, a postavil tolko k nochi) — Yesterday he spent the whole evening putting up the shelf and only finished by night. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
