Dva stola, pyat stolov: counting bends the noun

One thing keeps the dictionary form: odin stol, odna lampa. Then the counting starts, and the noun bends with the number. For example: “Два стола и пять столов” — Two tables and five tables. A rule from the Russian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

One thing keeps the dictionary form: odin stol, odna lampa. Then the counting starts, and the noun bends with the number.

After dva, tri and chetyre the noun takes a special counting form: dva stola, tri lampy, chetyre okna. From pyat upward it takes the plural of-form: pyat stolov, shest lamp, sem okon.

Gender stays in play: stol is he, lampa is she, okno is it, and each has its own pair of forms. dvenadtsat mesyatsev, trinadtsat yablok — a long row lives by the rule of five.

The trap: in dva stola and in pyat stolov it is never the number that changes, but the tail of the noun.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
