V kurtke and v kurtku: where against where to

The preposition v looks the same in both phrases; the form of the noun tells them apart. v kurtke — where? you are wearing it. v kurtku — where to? you put it on. For example: “Я еду в аэропорт” — I am on my way to the airport. A rule from the Russian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

The preposition v looks the same in both phrases; the form of the noun tells them apart. v kurtke — where? you are wearing it. v kurtku — where to? you put it on.

Place answers where, direction answers where to: v gorode — I stand and stay; v gorod — I ride and arrive. One preposition carries both meanings, and mixing them up is the habit of everyone used to separate words.

Na works the same way: na plyazhe — lying in the sun; na plyazh — walking there. Listen to the tail of the word, not to the preposition.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
