Nado, mozhno, nelzya: who feels it and what for
Nado and nuzhno are subjectless: no I inside, only a to-whom. mne nado gotovit, mame nado spat — the person who needs it stands in the to-form: mne, mame, tebe. For example: “Мне надо готовить суп” — I need to cook soup. A rule from the Russian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Nado and nuzhno are subjectless: no I inside, only a to-whom. mne nado gotovit, mame nado spat — the person who needs it stands in the to-form: mne, mame, tebe.
Mozhno is permission, nelzya is a ban, and both are subjectless too: mozhno voyti?, syuda nelzya. Mogu is about strength and skill — mogu gotovit, ne mogu spat — and this one is personal, like dolzhen.
Negation flips the meaning: ne nado — better not to do it at all; ne mozhno is not said. Ne mogu means circumstances are stronger than I am: tired, busy, it will not come out.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
