Why it looks that way

Literally "I ask" — and one of the most convenient words in the language. Please in a request, please when you hand something over, the reply to dziękuję ("don't mention it"), and the prompt: Proszę? — "sorry, what did you say?"

A word with a story stays in memory longer than one learned as a “spelling — translation” pair: memory holds on to meaning, not to a string.
