Why it looks that way

The under-preposition with the object form: towards the end. For the end-word the object form looks exactly like the dictionary form. Then comes the of-form: pod koniec tygodnia, towards the end of the week.

A word with a story stays in memory longer than one learned as a “spelling — translation” pair: memory holds on to meaning, not to a string.
