Why it looks that way

Masculine obaj about people, oba about things, feminine obie: obaj bracia, obie siostry. Saying "both" in the wrong gender is not allowed — the grammar will notice. There is no special dual grammar here: oba is simply a plural wearing the "both" tag.

  The honest relative: said much like its cousins elsewhere. Half a kilo at the market is asked for shorter — pół kilo — while połowa is about anything divisible: połowa godziny, połowa miasta.
