Why it looks that way

The would-particle is the whole of the English "would" — all the politeness rests on it, a rule you know. The English "not" is not translated: could you, not "could you not".

A word with a story stays in memory longer than one learned as a “spelling — translation” pair: memory holds on to meaning, not to a string.
