Polish alphabet
The Polish alphabet is the Polish Latin alphabet: 32 letters. 32 Latin letters: nine with diacritics — and no q, v or x anywhere. The characters are grouped: polish tails and strokes, familiar at a glance, foreign to the ear, sound matches sight. Below is a table with sound and a breakdown by groups.
All 32 letters in one list
a, ą, b, c, ć, d, e, ę, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, ł, m, n, ń, o, ó, p, r, s, ś, t, u, w, y, z, ź, ż
Polish tails and strokes
Nine signs: two nasals (ą, ę), three soft ones (ć, ś, ź — with ń), ó, ł, and their dots and tails. A tail marks a nasal sound, a stroke marks softness, a dot is history.
Familiar at a glance, foreign to the ear
Six letters where trusting the eye costs you: the shape is familiar, but the sound behind it is a different one.
Sound matches sight
Seventeen letters with nothing to learn: the sound is exactly the one you expect.
What to know about this Latin script
There are 32 letters. Q, V and X are not in the alphabet — they turn up only in foreign names and signs like "taxi". ó and u share one sound, and so do ż and rz. Only the history of a word tells the two spellings apart. The digraphs "sz", "cz", "rz", "ch", "dz" count as combinations of two letters, not as separate signs. Stress falls almost always on the second-to-last syllable — a rule that knows almost no exceptions.
Where this script came from and why it looks the way it does
Rz and ż sound the same in Polish — like “zh” — and this is not a rule but a memory: a few centuries ago rz was a genuine soft “r”, which over time wore down into “zh”. The spelling kept the difference: rzeka, “river”, is read “zheka”.

Test yourself
Five characters at random. No need to answer aloud — just pick; the answer appears at once.
- Which character reads as “ah”?
A clean "ah". It stays a full a stressed or unstressed — it is never pulled toward the schwa of "about"
- Which character reads as “ts”?
The letter lies to the eye: cena is "TSEH-nah", the price — the ts of "cats", never "sena"
- Which character reads as “eh (never reduced)”?
A clean "eh". An unstressed e does not reduce: hotel keeps its "eh" — it never becomes "huh-TEL"
- Which character reads as “hard g (always)”?
Always a hard g, the g of "go". Before i and e it never softens and never turns into a j sound
- Which character reads as “y (as in "yes")”?
The glide vowels are assembled from j plus a vowel rather than given letters of their own: jutro is "YOO-troh", jest is "yest"
How to learn letters so they stay
You cannot learn a table by staring at it. What works: see a character, try to recall its sound, get it wrong, see the right answer — and come back to that character in a day, not in an hour.
- Recalling beats re-reading. Covering the translation and trying to remember it does more than reading it ten more times.checked many timesAdesope, Trevisan & Sundararajan, 2017, Review of Educational Research 87(3) · 188 experiments, 272 comparisons. g = 0.61; against plain re-reading 0.51, against passive review 0.93.
- It is better to test yourself the next day than at the end of the same session. That is why a word comes back to you tomorrow.checked many timesAdesope, Trevisan & Sundararajan, 2017, Review of Educational Research 87(3) · g = 0.82 when tested a day or two later, against 0.56 on the same day.
- Studying a little every day gets more into your head than spending the same total time in one sitting.checked many timesDonovan & Radosevich, 1999, Journal of Applied Psychology 84(5) · 63 studies compared, difference d = 0.46 — a sizeable figure for a learning effect.
That is why the alphabet in the app is learned a few characters at a time, not all at once: nobody holds 32 signs in one sitting.
Frequently asked
How many letters in the Polish alphabet?
32 letters — The Polish Latin alphabet: a, ą, b, c, ć, d, e, ę, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, ł, m, n, ń, o, ó, p, r, s, ś, t, u, w, y, z, ź, ż. The characters have capital and small forms.
Can I listen to how the Polish letters sound?
Not yet: we have no recordings for this script. That is why there is no sound button either — it would be silent.
How long does it take to learn the Polish alphabet?
A few characters a day — one to two weeks, if you come back to what you covered. The whole alphabet crammed in an evening is remembered for an evening: without reviews the next day and three days later, the characters are almost entirely gone.
Where to start: letters or words?
Both at once: you can already read this script, so a separate letters course is not needed — a reference table is enough.
