We started the project in spring, and everything had to be done from scratch. In the first month the work went well; then there was a glitch in the system and the schedule fell apart. Some waved it away, thinking it would fail, but we did not stop. When the obstacle was identified, we thought the cause through and changed the method. The new approach cut the costs, and the result exceeded expectations. In autumn we completed the project: there was a delay, but everything was done by the rules.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. How did they start the project?

  2. What broke the schedule?

  3. What did they do when the obstacle became clear?

  4. What was the result like?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Kazakh?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
