Kün ashıq, aua raiy bulyñğyr: weather is said without a verb

To say it is sunny you need no verb. Kazakh says the weather with a noun: kün ashıq, the sun is clear; aua raiy bulyñğyr, the weather is overcast. For example: “Бүгін күн ашық, бірақ жел суық” — Today it is sunny, but the wind is cold. A rule from the Kazakh course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

To say it is sunny you need no verb. Kazakh says the weather with a noun: kün ashıq, the sun is clear; aua raiy bulyñğyr, the weather is overcast.

Past and future hang on the link bolu. Kün ashıq boldy is it was sunny; erteñ kün ashıq bolady is tomorrow it will be sunny. In the present the link keeps quiet.

Rain and snow want a verb of their own, and it shares a root with them. Zhañbyr zhauady is the rain rains; qar zhaudy is the snow fell.

The trap: the word kün holds sun, day and sky at once. Kün ystyq is it is hot; kün batty is the sun has set; zhaqsy kün is a good day.

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
