Bardy, barğan, baratyn edi: four pasts and what separates them
Kazakh has four pasts, and you pick between them not by how long ago it was, but by how you know it. For example: “Балалық шағым ауылда өтті, жазда өзенге баратын едік” — My childhood passed in the village; in summer we would go to the river. A rule from the Kazakh course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Kazakh has four pasts, and you pick between them not by how long ago it was, but by how you know it.
The -dy form says I saw it myself and I answer for it: mektepti bitirdim, I finished school. That is the working form for telling your own story.
The -ğan form says it happened and its trace still counts. Men Almatyda tuğanmyn is I was born in Almaty and I am from there. The -atyn edi form says it was a habit: auylğa zhii baratyn edik, we often went to the village.
The -ypty form says you heard it from others: ol üilenipti, he got married, it turns out. The trap: used to fits only -atyn edi. Plain bardyq would mean we went once.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
