Text

  • Hiri honetan boluntario asko daude. Batzuek umeei laguntzen diete haur eskolatik irtetean; besteek pobreentzat janaria biltzen dute elizaren ondoan. Ni larunbatetan joaten naiz: zaharrei dendarako eta ospitalerako bidaia antolatzen diet, eta dena txandan egiten dugu, inork ez dezan gehiegi lan egin. Hiriko jendeak ezagutzen gaitu eta harrera ona izaten da beti. Urtean behin ongintzako afaria egiten dugu: dohaintzaz biltzen den diruarekin baloiak, liburuak eta jolasak erosten ditugu haur eskolarentzat.
There are many volunteers in this city. Some help children after kindergarten; others collect food for the poor by the church. I go on Saturdays: I arrange rides to the shop and the hospital for the elderly, and we do everything in turns, so that nobody works too much. The city people know us, and the reception is always good. Once a year we hold a charity dinner: with the collected donations we buy balls, books and games for the kindergarten.

  3. How does the city receive the volunteers?

  4. What do the collected donations go to?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Basque?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
