Lo hooks onto an adjective and turns it into a nameless thing, like English 'the good thing' or 'the hard part'. Lo bueno is the good in this; lo difícil is the difficulty.
Superlatives come here too: lo mejor de la película, lo peor del libro. The adjective after lo is always masculine singular.
Lo que means 'what': lo que más me gustó fue el final. Lo de means 'that business of': lo de ayer, lo de siempre. Both are colloquial and very common.
