El imperfecto: the backdrop of the past and its quarrel with the indefinido
A childhood cannot be told with the indefinido alone. A life has events, but it also has the backdrop they happened against, and that backdrop is the imperfecto. For example: “De pequeño pasaba los veranos en el pueblo de mis abuelos” — As a child I spent the summers in the village of my grandparents. A rule from the Spanish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
A childhood cannot be told with the indefinido alone. A life has events, but it also has the backdrop they happened against, and that backdrop is the imperfecto.
The forms are honest. For -ar: -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, -aban. For -er and -ir one shared set: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. The whole language has three irregulars: ser → era, ir → iba, ver → veía.
It says what things were like: la casa era grande, hacía frío. And what people used to do: todos los veranos íbamos al pueblo. Age and clock time in the past come here too: tenía diez años, eran las ocho.
The quarrel with the indefinido is settled by your own view. Vivía en Madrid draws no borders; viví en Madrid tres años closes the stretch.

- Conocía a Marta de vista, pero la conocí de verdad en aquella bodaI knew Marta by sight, but I really met her at that wedding
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
