The se that changes the meaning: quedarse, meterse, llevarse

Se has a role that throws people: it changes the verb's meaning completely instead of adding 'oneself'. Such pairs have to be learned as two separate words. For example: “Quedamos a las ocho, pero al final me quedé en casa” — We arranged to meet at eight, but in the end I stayed home. A rule from the Spanish course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Se has a role that throws people: it changes the verb's meaning completely instead of adding 'oneself'. Such pairs have to be learned as two separate words.

Quedar is to arrange to meet: quedamos a las seis. Quedarse is to stay: me quedo en casa. Meter is to shove in, meterse to meddle: no te metas. Ir is to go, irse to leave: me voy is 'I'm off'.

Then a row where se is obligatory and the bare verb does not exist. Atreverse is to dare, quejarse to complain, portarse to behave, darse cuenta to realize.

And a third row, the mutual ones: se conocieron en Sevilla, nos escribimos cada semana, no se hablan desde marzo. Here se means 'each other'.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
