Ordinals and dates: πρώτος, στις τρεις Μαρτίου
An ordinal in Greek is an ordinary adjective in -ος, -η, -ο: ο πρώτος όροφος, η πρώτη μέρα, το πρώτο δώρο. For example: “Ο γάμος είναι στις δώδεκα Ιουνίου” — The wedding is on June the twelfth. A rule from the Greek course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
An ordinal in Greek is an ordinary adjective in -ος, -η (-i), -ο (-o): ο πρώτος όροφος (o prótos órofos), η πρώτη μέρα (i próti méra), το πρώτο δώρο (to próto dóro).
The first ten run πρώτος (prótos), δεύτερος (défteros), τρίτος (trítos), τέταρτος (tétartos), πέμπτος (pémptos), έκτος (éktos), έβδομος (évdomos), όγδοος (ógdoos), ένατος (énatos), δέκατος (dékatos). Round tens take their own ending: εικοστός (ikostós), τριακοστός.
A date, though, uses the plain counting number instead. English says "the third of March"; Greek says στις τρεις Μαρτίου (stis tris Martíu) — "on three of March".
The month moves into its "of" shape: Ιανουαρίου (Ianuaríu), Μαρτίου (Martíu), Αυγούστου. One exception: the first day of a month does take the ordinal — την πρώτη Ιανουαρίου (tin próti Ianuaríu).
