Two words for one thing: εφτά and επτά
Greek often keeps two words for the same thing: εφτά and επτά for seven, οχτώ and οκτώ for eight. The first of each pair is the living one, the second the bookish one. For example: “Η βδομάδα έχει εφτά μέρες” — There are seven days in a week. A rule from the Greek course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Greek often keeps two words for the same thing: εφτά (eftá) and επτά (eptá) for seven, οχτώ (okhtó) and οκτώ (októ) for eight. The first of each pair is the living one, the second the bookish one.
History left it that way. Until 1976 a second written norm, pulled toward the ancient language, ran beside everyday speech. In the end the living speech became the language of the state.
The bookish words stayed on signs and in paperwork. ιχθυοπωλείο in a shop window and ψαράδικο in talk mean one thing — a fish shop.
So when a solemn word turns up where you expected a plain one, do not hunt for a dialect. It is most likely the bookish twin of a word you know. Speak the living one.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
