How it works
A conversation in Divehi rests not on "please" and "sorry" but on softening inside the verb itself.
-ބަލަ turns a command into a request: ދީ ("give") gives ދީބަލަ ("do give"), ބުނޭ (buney) gives ބުނެބަލަ (bunebala). Among your own people this is the commonest request.
The insert -ލަ- makes the action small and so undemanding: ވިސްނާނަން ("I will think") gives ވިސްނާލާނަން ("I will think it over"). It also softens your own intention.
-ތޯ (-tho) instead of -ތަ raises the politeness: ދޭހަވެއްޖެތަ (dheyhavejjetha) to a friend, ދޭހަވެއްޖެތޯ (dheyhavejjethoa) to a boss. And about the person you speak to there are special words: ބުނުން becomes ވިދާޅުވުން, ދިނުން (dhinun) becomes ދެއްވުން. About yourself they are never used.
