Articles: el, la — and the apostrophe
Every noun has a gender, and the article travels with it. Learn the word together with its article: not "casa" but la casa. For example: “el llibre → els llibres” — the book → the books. A rule from the Catalan course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Every noun has a gender, and the article travels with it. Learn the word together with its article: not "casa" but la casa.
English has one the. Catalan picks among four: el, la, els, les. A rule of thumb: a consonant or -o at the end takes el, and -a takes la.
Before a vowel the article shrinks to l': el home becomes l'home, la aigua becomes l'aigua. The apostrophe is obligatory — "lhome" is not a word.
By example
- el llibre → els llibresthe book → the books
- l'homethe man — el and home fuse into one word
- l'aigua és fredathe water is cold
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
