Definiteness: the word bir
There is no article at all, yet the difference between "some" and "that very one" exists. It is carried by the little word bir — one. Bir kurtka oldim — I bought some jacket, mentioned for the first time. For example: “Bir mehmonxona oldida palma bor” — Some hotel has a palm tree in front of it. A rule from the Uzbek course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
There is no article at all, yet the difference between "some" and "that very one" exists. It is carried by the little word bir — one. Bir kurtka oldim — I bought some jacket, mentioned for the first time.
Without bir the object is already known, or the talk is about things in general: kurtka qishda kerak — in winter one needs a jacket, any jacket. The first mention brings in bir; afterwards the thing is discussed without it.
The demonstratives take over the job of "that very one": bu koʻylak — this shirt, shu rang — this color. Possession works the same: xona kaliti — the key of the room, already known.
The rule is short: new — with bir, familiar — without. To an English eye bir plays the part of "a"; without it the phrase hangs unfinished for a native speaker.
Table
| Meaning | First mention | About the familiar one |

| some color | bir rang | rang |
| some hotel | bir mehmonxona | mehmonxona |
| some boat | bir qayiq | qayiq |
| some hour | bir soat | soat |
By example

- Mehmonxona yaqin ediThe hotel (that very one) was close by
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
