English

Oliia, maslo, olyva: three oils for one word

English trusts one word, oil, to cover the kitchen and the garage. Ukrainian splits the job three ways, and the wrong pick is noticed at once. For example: “Долий (Dolyi) трохи (trokhy) олії (olii) на (na) сковорідку” (skovoridku) — Add a bit more oil to the pan. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

English trusts one word, oil, to cover the kitchen and the garage. Ukrainian splits the job three ways, and the wrong pick is noticed at once.

Oliia is the plant kind: soniashnykova oliia sunflower oil, olyvkova oliia olive oil, dolyi olii pour in some more.

Maslo is butter and nothing else: verkhkove maslo, buterbrod z maslom. Say the bare word and butter is what you get. Olyva is the machine kind: motorna olyva, zaminyty olyvu. The same word is the olive tree and its fruit.

Similar trios: zhaba covers both frog and toad; shkira is skin and leather at once, while shkirka is fruit peel. And the clock is one word, hodynnyk, where English needs two for clock and watch.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

Oliia, maslo or olyva: which oil is which?

Maslo is butter and nothing else: verkhkove maslo, buterbrod z maslom. Say the bare word and butter is what you get. Olyva is the machine kind: motorna olyva, zaminyty olyvu. The same word is the olive tree and its fruit.

What does it look like in a Ukrainian example sentence?

“Долий (Dolyi) трохи (trokhy) олії (olii) на (na) сковорідку” (skovoridku) (Dolyi trokhy olii na skovoridku) — Add a bit more oil to the pan. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
