"And" the Ukrainian way: i, y and ta
Ukrainian has three words for "and". You choose by sound, not by meaning. For example: “Кава і хліб” (Kava i khlib) — coffee and bread. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Ukrainian has three words for "and". You choose by sound, not by meaning.
i is the everyday one: kava i khlib, coffee and bread. After a vowel it often becomes y, said like the "y" of "yes": mama y tato, mom and dad. ta means the same "and". Use it for variety, or when i already stands close by.
Right next to them lives another short word: chy, which means "or". Chai chy kava? is "tea or coffee?".
Table
| word | when | example |
|---|---|---|
| i | the everyday "and" | kava i khlib |
| y | after a vowel | mama y tato |
| ta | for variety | tsiny ta yakosti — price and quality |
| chy | "or" | chai chy kava |

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
