How it works

Zorunda is pressure from outside: the law, the boss, the circumstances. The build is simple: the verb in its plain form, then zorunda with a person tail. Belgeleri şahsen getirmek zorundasınız, you must bring the papers in person. The denial sits on the link, not the verb: ödemek zorunda değilim.
With kalmak the same link gives had no choice: beklemek zorunda kaldım.
The gap with -meli is exactly the source of the debt. Gitmeliyim is I decided so; gitmek zorundayım is I am being made to. English have to covers both, while the Turkish word reports which one every time.
