Za novo leto, ob praznikih, na rojstni dan: time and occasion through prepositions

Slovenian spreads time and occasion across prepositions. What you learn is not a rule but a habit: which preposition goes with which occasion. For example: “Za novo leto gremo na kres, na prvi januar pa spimo do poldneva” — For New Year we go to the bonfire, and on the first of January we sleep till noon. A rule from the Slovenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Slovenian spreads time and occasion across prepositions. What you learn is not a rule but a habit: which preposition goes with which occasion.

Za is for a holiday, for the sake of an event: za božič, za novo leto, za rojstni dan. Na is a particular day: na veliko noč, na prvi maj. The difference is fine: za veliko noč is Easter in general, na veliko noč is that very day.

Ob is repeated time and occasion: ob praznikih, ob petkih, ob koncu tedna. The same word tells the time: ob sedmih — at seven. A weekday goes with v: v sredo, v soboto.

Med is 'during': med prazniki, med obredom. Čez is after an interval: čez teden dni. Pred and po are before and after: pred praznikom, po večerji.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
