One ending or two: -եր and -ներ
The plural is chosen by the length of the word, not by gender or the last letter. The rule is short: a one-syllable word takes -եր, a longer one takes -ներ. ծառ (dzarr) → ծառեր (dzarrer), տոմս (doms) → տոմսեր, քար (k'ar) → քարեր. But ալիք (alik') → ալիքներ (alik'ner), կենդանի (gentani) → կենդանիներ (gentaniner), ճամպրուկ (jambrug) → ճամպրուկներ. For example: “Այսօր ալիքները մեծ են” (aysor alik'nerə medz en) — Today the waves are big.
How it works

Syllables are counted by sound, not by letters. Words in -ութիւն are always long: ուրախութիւն (urakhut'yun) → ուրախութիւններ. But ուս (us) or գոյն (kuyn) has one syllable and takes the short ending.
The exceptions are few but frequent: մարդ (mart) → մարդիկ (martig) (people), կին (gin) → կանայք (women), տիկին (digin) → տիկնայք. Learn them as separate words.
The main surprise: after a number there is no plural. Երկու (yergu) տոմս (doms) (yergu doms), հինգ (hink) օր (or) (hink or), տասը (dasə) մարդ (mart) (dasə mart), երեք (yerek') ափսէ (ap'se) (yerek' ap'se). The number already says how many. The same goes after քանի՞ (k'ani): քանի՞ (k'ani) օր (or) (k'ani or), how many days.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in a Western Armenian example sentence?
“Այսօր ալիքները մեծ են” (aysor alik'nerə medz en) — Today the waves are big. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
