Persian pronunciation
In Persian these are what take effort: deep ق and غ — a sound from the throat between k and g — and vowel length that changes the word. The easy part: sh, zh, ch, z, l, m, n and r sound as an English speaker expects, and stress almost always falls on the last syllable. Here are the sounds and words people stumble on most often.

Words that are not read the way they look

توجه (tavadzhzhâh) — attention. the doubled jj stretches: tavajjoh, not "tavajoh"
شعبه بانک (shâbbe bânk) — bank branch. the doubled bb stretches: shobbe
جراح (dzherrâh) — surgeon. the doubled rr stretches: jarraah
تخصص (takhassâs) — specialty, qualification. the doubled ss stretches: takhassos
مرخصی استعلاجی (mârakhkhasi estelâdzhi) — sick leave. the doubled khh stretches: morakhkhasi
مدت اجاره (mâddate edzhâre) — term of the lease. the doubled dd stretches: moddat
تعمیر کردن (tammir kardan) — to renovate, do repairs. the doubled mm stretches: tammir

How to work on pronunciation on your own
Listening and repeating aloud is not a platitude — it is the only technique available without a teacher. Saying words out loud gives a small but measured gain over silent reading, and it is also the only way to notice that your mouth is not shaping a sound your ear already tells apart.
- A word said out loud is remembered slightly better than one read in silence. The difference is small.checked littleFawcett, 2013, Acta Psychologica · g = 0.37. Part of the effect is not “out loud” winning but “in silence” losing.
Second: listen to whole words, not isolated sounds. A sound never occurs in speech on its own — it always stands next to its neighbours and changes with them.
Frequently asked
Is Persian pronunciation hard?
Deep ق and غ — a sound from the throat between k and g — and vowel length that changes the word. At the same time, sh, zh, ch, z, l, m, n and r sound as an English speaker expects, and stress almost always falls on the last syllable.
Can you train pronunciation without a teacher?
To be understood — yes. Listen to how a word sounds and repeat it aloud. As for speaking well enough to pass for a local: almost nobody manages that, and there is no need. The goal is to be understood, not to hide that you are a visitor.
