Text

  • Plazan hiru lagunek albiste baten inguruan hitz egin dute. Lehenengoak uste du sare sozialek albiste azkarrak ematen dituztela. Bigarrenak, aldiz, kontra egin du: zurrumurru asko daude, esan du, eta ez da fidatzen. Hirugarrena zatika ados dago: azkarrak dira, baina egiaztatu behar dira. Azkenean denak bat etorri dira puntu batean: iturria beti begiratu behar da.
On the square three friends talked about the news. The first thinks social media give fast news. The second, however, objected: there are many rumors, he said, and he does not trust them. The third partly agrees: they are fast, but they must be verified. In the end everybody agreed on one thing: the source must always be checked.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. How many people talked on the square?

  2. What does the first one believe?

  3. What did the second one say?

  4. What did everybody agree on?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Basque?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
