Text

There are many volunteer organizations in the city, and all of them need people with time and will. Pau, who is now unemployed, volunteers two days a week: he hands out food to families who need it. He receives nothing, but says every smile is a payment. The organization also collects clothes, makes donations and holds concerts to raise money. At the end of every month the volunteers meet at the office and cook for everyone in turns.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. How many days a week does Pau volunteer?

  2. What does Pau do as a volunteer?

  3. What, in Pau's words, is he paid for the work?

  4. What do the volunteers do at the end of the month?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Catalan?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
