It is not about the future but about politeness. A request in the present sounds like a demand; in the condicional it sounds like an invitation.
Compare Puc preguntar? — may I ask? — with Podria preguntar-li una cosa? — could I ask you something?
Two softeners go with it: si us plau at the end, potser at the head of an answer. Podria repetir-ho més a poc a poc, si us plau? Potser demà puc — maybe tomorrow I can.
