Wishes and congratulations: que + subjuntiu
A wish is built with que plus the subjuntiu — the form for what has not happened yet. For example: “Que faci bon temps el cap de setmana!” — May the weather be good on the weekend!. A rule from the Catalan course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
A wish is built with que plus the subjuntiu — the form for what has not happened yet.
Que faci bon temps! — may the weather be good! Que tinguis sort! — good luck, literally "may you hold luck".
The forms are learned whole: faci (from fer), plogui (from ploure), tinguis (from tenir).
Ready-made congratulations need no verb: Felicitats! — congratulations, Per molts anys! — happy birthday. The Catalan birthday wish is its own: Que compleixis molts més! — may you turn many more!
By example
- Que faci bon temps el cap de setmana!May the weather be good on the weekend!
- Que tinguis sort a l'examen!Good luck at the exam!
- Que plogui aviat, el camp té set!May the rain come soon — the field is thirsty!
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
