How it works

Ukrainian packs whole English phrases into single words more often than you would guess. The prefix iak-nai- does the job of as ... as possible: iaknaishvydshe, iaknaikrashche, iaknaiblyzhche, iaknaibilishe. A twin prefix shcho-nai- means the same: shchoanmenshe at the very minimum, shchoanbilishe at the very maximum.

Other packings of the same kind: prynaimni at the very least, perevazhno mostly, nasyly with great effort. And udvichi twice over, mabut probably, tobto that is, daremno in vain.

And the road runs both ways: some single English words need two in Ukrainian. To take part is braty uchast, to prefer is nadavaty perevahu, once is odnoho razu.

Phrase length almost never matches word for word, and forcing it is the surest way to sound like a phrasebook.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
