Motion prefixes: one root, eight directions
Ukrainian builds its walking words the way English builds come in, go out, run over. One root stays put; a prefix gives the direction. For example: “Підійди до вікна і подивись” — Come up to the window and look. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Ukrainian builds its walking words the way English builds come in, go out, run over. One root stays put; a prefix gives the direction.
Pid- moves you up to something: pidijty, come up to. Vid- moves you away: vidijty, step away. Pere- crosses: pereity, cross over. Z- brings you down: ziity, come down, and ziitysia, meet up. Vy- takes you out: vyity, go out. Ob- goes around: obiity, walk around.
The finishing touch is the preposition, which names the destination. Pidijty do come up to, vidijty vid step away from, pereity cherez cross over, zaiity v drop in.
Watch the little i that appears between prefix and root: pidijty, but pidkhodyty; ziity, but skhodyty.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
