Zminyty and zminytysia: who changes and what changes
Nearly every verb of change lives in a pair: without -sia somebody changes something, with -sia the thing changes by itself. English plays the same flip with two different verbs — prices rose, they raised prices. Ukrainian flips one verb. For example: “Компанія скоротила витрати” — The company cut its costs. How it works
Nearly every verb of change lives in a pair: without -sia somebody changes something, with -sia the thing changes by itself. English plays the same flip with two different verbs — prices rose, they raised prices. Ukrainian flips one verb.
Tsiny pidvyshchyly — somebody raised the prices, there is a doer. Tsiny pidvyshchylysia — the prices went up, no doer in sight.
The same pairs: zbilishyty → zbilishytysia, skorotyty → skorotytysia, onovyty → onovytysia, zminyty → zminytysia, pohirshyty → pohirshytysia.
The tail is written solid, always -sia, never the short version: zminyvsia, zminylasia, zminylosia, zminylysia. And it never drops. A sentence like sprava robyt, the matter does, is not a style choice — it is simply broken. Pick a side: who acts, or what changes.
