How it works

All the politeness in the language hangs on one particle: b after a vowel, by after a consonant, plus the past form. Ia b khotiv, my b poyikhaly, vin by zrobyv.

English plays the same trick with could and would — could you, I wanted to ask — politeness borrowed from the past. Ukrainian does it with one syllable, and it can move. After the verb (khotiv by), the pronoun (ia b khotiv), the conjunction (iakby ia znay). A request without b sounds like an order: bulo b dobre, khotilosia b.

The conjunction iakby is written solid and drags a second b along: iakby ia znay, ia b skazav. Iakshcho is the real-world if: iakshcho bude chas, zatelefonuiu.

And shchob — so that — is also solid, with the verb in the past: shchob ty znav, shchob use viishlo.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
