Where it is: naproty, poruch, uzdovzh, za rohom

Every preposition of place drags its own noun shape behind it, and the wrong pair is audible at once. Learn them as pairs, like vocabulary. For example: “Аптека напроти зупинки” — The pharmacy is across from the stop. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Every preposition of place drags its own noun shape behind it, and the wrong pair is audible at once. Learn them as pairs, like vocabulary.

The of form follows: naproty opposite (naproty apteky), pozadu behind (pozadu budynku), poperedu. Also uzdovzh along (uzdovzh vulytsi), bielia by (bielia metro), kolo, posered.

The -om form follows: poruch iz next to (poruch iz bankom), pered in front of (pered vkhodom), za behind (za rohom). Then nad, pid, mizh. The place form follows u/v, na, pry: u dvori, na rozi, pry vkhodi.

The preposition z changes for sound, like a and an. Z before a vowel (z ozera), iz between consonants (iz mista), zi before a cluster (zi svitloforom). And note: do is direction (do vokzalu), but being at the station takes na. Na vokzali, na roboti, na stantsii.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
