Diminutives: babusia, donka, khvylynka
Ukrainian shrinks words far more readily than English, and not only for babies and kittens. Very often the small form IS the word, and the full form sounds blunt or bookish. For example: “Зачекайте хвилинку, будь ласка” — Wait a minute, please. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Ukrainian shrinks words far more readily than English, and not only for babies and kittens. Very often the small form IS the word, and the full form sounds blunt or bookish.
Babusia granny, didus grandpa, donka daughter, knyzhka book, richka river, svichka candle, skrynka box, khvylynka a wee minute. You could ask someone to wait a plain khvylynu — but khvylynku is warmer, and it is what people actually say.
The suffix stock is small: -k- (knyzhka, richka), -ok/-yk (lystok, khlopchyk), -sia/-s (babusia, didus), -ochk-/-enk- (donechka, tykhenko). That last set truly miniaturizes and carries real affection.
Even adjectives and adverbs shrink: harnenkyi, tykhenko, shvydenko. This is not baby talk — it is ordinary warm politeness, and hearing the difference is part of learning the language.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
