Gender that surprises: bil, adresa, mebli
A word grabbed by ear usually gives itself away not by sound but by its gender tag. English offers no clue, so this short list is worth memorizing — it comes up daily. For example: “Гострий біль минув до вечора” — The sharp pain faded before evening. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
A word grabbed by ear usually gives itself away not by sound but by its gender tag. English offers no clue, so this short list is worth memorizing — it comes up daily.
Masculine where you might not expect it. Bil pain, step the steppe, Sybir, posud dishes, rybalka fishing. Sobaka dog, pidrobitok a side job, yarmarok a fair.
Feminine: adresa address (moya adresa), shafa wardrobe, kryza crisis, vantazhivka truck, elektryka, pochezha fire, navychka habit.
Plural only: hroshi, mebli furniture, dveri, liky, skhody stairs, shtany, okuliary, shakhy chess. And the reverse: volossia hair, vzuttia footwear, lystia leaves have no plural. The words around them go singular too — volossia dovge, vzuttia zruchne.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
