Money: hroshi, vystachae, plattyty za

Money exists only in the plural: velyki hroshi big money, bez hroshei, za hroshi. There is no singular, and the verb always agrees: hroshi zakinchylysia, the money ran out. For example: “На все грошей не вистачає” — There is not enough money for everything. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Money exists only in the plural: velyki hroshi big money, bez hroshei, za hroshi. There is no singular, and the verb always agrees: hroshi zakinchylysia, the money ran out.

Enough and not enough are said impersonally, with vystachae plus the of form: vystachae hroshei, ne vystachae chasu, ne vystachae ruk. Nobody is the subject; the person is added in the to form: meni ne vystachae.

You pay za shcho — for the thing: plattyty za kvartyru, plattyty za proizd. What you pay with is a bare instrumental, no preposition: plattyty kartkoiu, plattyty hotivkoiu. The English for and with map one to one here.

Three prefixes on one root, worth sorting out at once. Plattyty pay in general, splatyty pay a bill off completely, zplatyty pay someone for something.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
